Abstract:

Are Europe's hospitals equipped to meet eHealth opportunities? This is one of the key issues covered by the Health Information Network Europe (HINE), which takes the pulse of Europe's eHealth market on a continuous basis.

The HINE eHospital Census (with research conducted by HBS Consulting) is the largest survey of hospitals ever conducted in Europe. It involved telephone interviews with hospital CIOs in 900 hospitals in 15 countries, and provides a unique benchmark of how sophisticated hospitals are today in terms of eHealth usage, from advanced EPR to ePrescribing.

Using a four-level sophistication model, HINE concluded that while almost 100% of European hospitals have reached Level 1 (PAS) and close to 90% are at Level 2 (Common MPI, integration around patient number), the results dropped significantly from Level 3 onwards (clinical order, results, advanced medical library). Only 2% of European hospitals have reached Level 4 (decision support, ePrescribing). The differences from country to country are also significant. For example, Spain shows a rather sophisticated approach, with 26% of hospitals having reached level 3 and 5% at level 4 - the highest results after Sweden. France is lagging behind with only 0.75% reporting level 4.

HINE will showcase the main results of this survey at the eHealth conference.
