On Saturday 21 May 2005, eleven of Europe's top health leaders travel to Svalbard to warm up for the EU's annual eHealth conference, which takes place in Tromsø, Norway, on 23 and 24 May. Among polar bears and Arctic foxes in the world's northernmost community, the ministers will start their discussions about health services of the future with the use of ICT as a tool. Norway's Ansgar Gabrielsen, Norway's Minister of Health and Care Services, will be the host for his European counterparts.

The EU's annual ministerial conference on eHealth takes place from 23 to 24 May 2005 in Tromsø. Ansgar Gabrielsen, Norway's Minister of Health and Care Services, is hosting the conference to be held in collaboration with Luxembourg, which currently holds the EU presidency, and the European Commission. The Norwegian Directorate for Health and Social Welfare in collaboration with the NST has been assigned the operative responsibility for planning the conference in Tromsø.

66 ministers of health and ICT ministers from EU and EFTA member states have been invited to the ministerial conference in eHealth which takes place in Tromsø on 23 and 24 May. Ansgar Gabrielsen, Norway's Minister of Health and Care Services, is the host, and the Norwegian Centre for Telemedicine is the practical organizer in collaboration with the Norwegian Directorate for Health and Social Welfare (Sosial- og helsedirektoratet).

The Norwegian Government, represented by Ansgar Gabrielsen, Norway's Minister of Health and Care Services, has been given the responsibility for holding the EU summit conference on eHealth in 2005. The conference has never before been organized outside the EU. "This is a vote of confidence in Norway, and shows that we are regarded as being in the forefront of ICT development in the health service," says Mr Gabrielsen.
